Nathan Fritz, The study of American History is the study of a people's progress through the generations. Although there were countless losses and detriments to the comuntiy of the time, the next generation grew stronger from it. The progress of the people never stopped because of the social, economic, or governmental climate of the time. This study is a view of a Nation's ability to establish itself and continuously expand to its current state. Even now we are growing as a country, community, and people. there seems to be no end to our want to grow and progress to an even better state than we are now.
Chase Conklin Due to technological advances since America's creation, America has ben progressing and advancing. This came from overcoming hardships and struggles. Because of their intention to become a world power, Americans have developed an advanced economy and military. As Americans solve the problems of today, they will progress further than we have in the past.
Nathan, I agree with your opinion of American History. I wonder what would happen if the problems and hardships were to be solved, or at least the major problems? Would progress stop, or would it continue for other reasons?
Connor Kilian The history of America is a history progress. First the thirteen colonies developed into states. Then the combined states became recognized as one country. Finally the country matured into a developed nation with major international influence. America has grown through the good times and the bad, and as a nation it has refused to remain politically, economically, and geographically stationary.
Chase, I feel that if these hardships and problems were resolved, then progress would still ensue regardless. I feel that our country strives to become more and more advanced in spite of anything else. Even if no problems existed we could only learn and grow from the world around us.
Chase, I agree with your thoughts on American History, but do you think that America has progressed socially as well? That is to say, has America grown as a culture and community?
Emily Gregoire According to Oxford American Dictionary, the word "progress" is defined as "advance or development toward a better, more complete, or more modern condition". Throughout history America has certainly advanced and developed into a more complete and modern nation, yet has it been for the better? For example, the first use of the automobile dramatically changed society's lifestyle and allowed more efficient means of transporting people and goods, but scientific research has found that the burning of fossil fuels to run cars could slowly be ruining the balance of nature. Is America actually progressing, or are our advances leading to an eventual decline of our civilization?
Bridget.. The history of America is one of progression. Though America has gone through much trial and error throughout its documented history,i believe that America has yet to drastically have digressed over its years. We are currently in a state of economic recession and environmental delicacy. However,We have advanced in our sciences, technology and social/cultural understanding enough to outweigh our mistakes.
Connor, I strongly back your statement that.. "Then the combined states became recognized as one country. Finally the country matured into a developed nation with major international influence" America has seen the progression of communication, government organization and social tolerance. Therefore, our country has been able to form itself into the solid, yet diverse nation that it currently stands as.
Emily, I agree that we need to question the changes that are made but before that happens there needs to be an understanding. People are not perfect and neither are our solutions. Anytime we solve one problem then another will appear because of the solution. Could you say that progress is finding solutions to the problems that were caused by previous solutions?
Emily, I strongly agree that not all our progress is, or has been, for the better. I feel that there is still much we could do to make this country better. I also appreciate you defining progress, since how can we possibly discuss something we do not know the meaning of?
The problem with adressing the issue of progress is it is very subjective. Jargon often used along with the word "progress" are words like: backwards, technology, modern, and many more that have to do with being right or wrong. I consider progress as much more than just creating modern technologies such as computers and telephones. Although in the history of the United States our nation has grown phisically (it went from thirteen colonies to fifty states, as Connor pointed out), and has overcome many of our problems, we still have racism, hatred, war, poverty, and debt. I understand that progress is not a lack of problems, but rather how far we have come from the start, but one must always think about how we can grow as well. One big issue we have is hatred, and I don't know if when the country first started we had such hostility towards different groups of people and countries as some Americans do now, but the nineth anaversary of 9/11 reminded us all of how much hate has recently been harbored against terrorists, causing many to turn against all arabs and muslims. We have progressed in many ways, but have we also regressed in some others?
Geoffrey Keane American History is certainly a history of progress. America has gone through struggles that have threatened to tear this country in half and other periods which allowed the expansion of the country. Through all the turmoil and hardships of wars and an economic downfall, this country has managed to forge ahead. The momentum has transformed America from a collection of renegade colonies to a superpower of the world. However, the progress of America is slowing down. Militarily by drawn out wars; economically by our increasing debt and devalued dollar; and our position as a superpower is challenged by the fast growing developing countries such as China. However, technologically we are thriving and we have weathered one depression in our history, so there is possibility for further progress.
Nate, while I agree that generation by generation the nation has progressed. I have to disagree with your assertion about the unending drive to improve that the American people have. I believe that the majority of the population of the United States have been become accustomed to being viewed as the most powerful country in the world and are becoming complacent with regards to our betterment and progress.
American History is a history of progress. Take a look at the difference from the creation of the U.S. to present day. Take a look at the technology used today. Computers, cellphones, air conditioning, and other technologies are used often. In some cases, they have become essential. There is clear progress on this front.
I would agree with Jenny in saying how America has progressed both forwards and backwards. While we have advanced socially, we have also regressed in many ways, although perhaps not as many as we have progressed.
Geoffrey, I agree that the progress is slowing down, but is it possible for a country keep progressing without these hardships. Can we really keep moving forward without learning from our mistakes. The negative wars and the struggling economy is needed in order to find out how to keeping improving.
I certainly agree that our country has made it through tough times and has become stronger because of them. Yet as you mentioned, "we are currently in a state of economic recession and environmental delicacy". With our many technological advancements came the inflated price of goods (ruining our economy) and damage to the environment. Do you think that perhaps over time with further advancements we can fix our problems to make less damaging progress?
You make a valid point. I do realize that people make mistakes. As time goes by, new things come up that happen as consequences for the decisions that people made. We have no idea what we are capable of and what our actions will truly lead to, because no matter how much research is done there will still be mysteries in life. I do believe that America has progressed, but I also believe that much of the progress has had major consequences. I do not blame America for these problems that arise, because to be honest no one is ever a hundred percent sure that what they are doing is the "correct" decision.
Jenny,
I am glad that you found my definition helpful. Being aware of what important words actually mean definitely enables me to have a better understanding of the question.
I agree with you Emily. Despite causing new problems, America has been able to solve previous ones, allowing the nation to experience progress throughout its history.
Overall, American history is a history of progress. Think back to segregated schools, bathrooms, and diners-- racism at its absolute cruelest point. We currently have a black president and racial barriers are being torn down every day. America is a large community, and when the individuals within a community start to band together, that is progress. Although wars and terroism are set backs in our history, at least we fight as a whole. Making progress in anything will always have some type of set back. Along the way one will fail a test or miss a game-winning shot. However, it's studying even harder for the next test and shooting basketballs after practice that will ultimately lead to success and progression. America has picked itself up from 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the crash of the stock market, and many other disasters. Recovering from such events and coming back stronger as a community is what has made American history a history of progress.
The United States is a clear example of a country of progress. Not to make it sound like some perfect country, it definitely has its flaws. America has overcome some of the greatest disasters, whether it be economically, socially, environmentally or politically. The first steps of progress were the pilgrims, moving into a whole new continent, leading the way for the future. Every single day is a day of progress for the country; ideas are formed, technology is discovered, and advances are made. Some who do not agree we are a country of progress may point to events such as our self-induced economic crashes in the Great Depression or even the recent crisis, but the country made it through and learned from its mistakes, which is ultimately more important.
I completely agree with you and your example of our progress in the subject of racial tolerance. We have come so far; only 60 years ago, African-Americans could not walk down the street without being segregated against in one way or another. In the past election, the majority of arguably the world's most influential country decided to elect an African-American to lead them. If that is not progress, then I do not know what is.
Boyd (7:48am), I do think that some progress can be considered "bad progress". A few of these posts have mentioned that technology has been a progession for America, and I do not think that is entirely true. Laptops and cell phones have definitely advanced us in some areas, but consider the set backs: cyber bulling on websites such as facebook and myspace, texting and driving accidents. Both of these examples have lead to fatal results. Advancement in one area can lead to degression in another. X-box is a cool system, but too many kids are staying inside on summer days instead of running around with their friends. This has been one of the factors of why America is the "fattest" country in the world. Just because it's progress does not mean it is success.
American history is filled with progress. Dating back to the origins, the colonists, who built the country from the bottom up, established not only a working government, but also a prosperous one. America has been in constant growth since this time expanding geographically as well as economically and politically. There have also no doubt been issues and difficulties in American history, but these hardships that America has gone through has driven the country to improve and perfect their policies and attitudes to help control issues like racism and terrorism. Also drastically aiding improvement and betterment for America have been the continuous expansions in technology. The constant need to make things quicker, easier, and more efficient has driven America to become an influential figure in the world. This attitude to become a greater and more dominant world power has fueled and continues to fuel the growth and progress of America.
Gabe, I completely agree with you that America's mistakes and hardships have in the end helped the country. Every country will have their difficulties and how that country responds to them ultimately is what shows the countries true nature. America has continually rebounded from economic crises, environmental problems, and other issues that have in the end made the country better. But why do you think these problems occur in the first place? If America is learning from their mistakes, why do problems continue to arise or are these simply different problems for America to learn from?
Nathan (5:02pm), You made an interesting point saying that if there were no hardships, America would still find a way to advance through inspiration from other countries. Is growing from what another country has already accomplished a lack of creativity/originality, or is it just good thinking?
Unfortunately, problems arise in everything, because nothing is absolutely perfect. Though we as a country may not be doing the best we can to prevent some issues, the effort is there to lable our country as one in progress towards good, and not towards bad. Problems will always come up, and all we can do about them is rebound.
I really liked what Conor (Helfrich) said, "just because it's progress doesn't mean it's success" (4:00pm). I completely agree. I do not think that America has not made a lot of progress. In fact, I think that, if progress is change to reach a more modern and effective outcome, then America has progressed not only a lot, but over a long time span at a steady rate. However, that does not mean that it has been changes for the better. I understand that people who make this progress happen do not know how it will effect people in the future, but I feel that there are still many issues to adress, and ones that must be more fully addressed. Simply because we've made progress to become one of the most modern countries in the world, does not mean that all of the outcomes have been positive.
That's very true. Problems will always come up in America and in other countries as well, and America has defined itself as a nation that can regenerate and be a better country for itself and the world once recovered. Mistakes, problems, and issues allows American to learn and gain understanding on what works and what doesn't. In turn the country, as a whole, makes better choices and progresses, because learning from your own mistakes is one of the best ways to learn and move forward.
Boyd, I agree with and understand your comment about the necessity of problems to properly keep a country progressing. However, many countries have fallen from their track of progress due to overwhelming problems. Some examples of this fall from power include the Roman Empire, the British Empire and Third Reich. I am wondering if the multitude of problems that the United States is facing is too much for motivation and inspiration and will instead impede the progress of this nation.
American history is both a history of progress, but while this country has made certain progress at the same time it also creates certain issues. The U.S.A. has made many great advancements through out it's history, including technology and agriculture. Moving forward in certain areas sometimes has a negative effect on other areas. Take this contries technological improvements for example. Altough we can now use phones and computers to communicate, students stop practicing their ability to talk face to face with some one and their natural communication skills die. Video games and other electronic froms of entertainment prevent american kids from playing out side and getting exercise ,or being healthy. Also these technologies might prevent a kid from getting smarter and having other real world expiriences. We've also mastered the use of electricity and transportation which both are harming the environment and possibly contributing to ending our world.
MISTAKE, take out both in my first sentence of my answer.
@ Sean, I disagree that our technological improvements makes this country a history of progress because as we move forward with technology it creates many problems. All the progress this country makes ends up opening up other issues that come along with the certain advancement. Like Christopher White Wallace once said "more money more problems". No matter how powerfull and andvanced this country or any country gets it will always create more problems to deal with.
Connor, You make a very strong argument in stating "We currently have a black president and racial barriers are being torn down every day". Although the racism and terrorism of 9/11 and other turmoil’s with the Middle East are prevalent everyday, I also believe that we have made much progress in racial division. Races of all kind work for our government fight on our battlefields and run our country everyday. We have made many strides over the years towards becoming a non-racially driven nation.
